Guide To Navigation—try using the Expand/contract feature

Try this example to see how the Expand/Contract feature works.

Look at the middle of the page you are now reading. Find the thin, horizontal black line that runs from the left side to the right. Under this line you will see a new version of the page you were reading before you opened the page you are now reading.

Note the Exploring the Arts Foundation image at the top of the new version of the page, below. This new version is exactly the same as the old one on the previous page except:

  1. The column along the right border has been removed to simplify this example.
  2. The version of the page you are now looking at uses the Expand/Contract feature.
  3. There are a few lines of explanation at the top of the new page that you will not find on the old page.

Before you begin, note that:

  • The purple arrows on the page are bullets that let you know where hidden text is located.
  • Text may be hidden at more than one place on a page.
  • A different right-pointing purple bullet points to each place on the page where text is hidden.
  • Purple bullets are different from regular bullets.
  • Regular bullets are unaffected by the Expand/Contract feature.

Now try working with the page under the horizontal black line, but with the added benefit of the Expand/Contract feature:

  • Expose an item of hidden text:
    • Action:
      • Click one of the right-pointing purple bullets and the hidden text it points to will appear.
      • Note that the purple bullet now points downward.
  • Hide an item of visible text:
    • Action:
      • Click a down-pointing purple bullet.
      • Note that the formerly-exposed hidden text now vanishes.
      • The purple arrow returns to its original right-pointing orientation.
  • Expose all the text on the page where text is hidden:
    • Action:
      • Click the words Expand All.
      • Text hiding at all paces on the page is now exposed. No text is hidden.
      • Note changes in the orientation of purple bullets: they all point down.
  • Hide all the text on the page where formerly-hidden text is now exposed:
    • Action:
      • Click the words Contract All.
      • All exposed hidden text disappears all at once.
      • Note changes in the orientation of purple bullets: they all point right.

Each time you click a purple arrow, it twists and turns, first pointing to the right, then down, then back. That's why some people call the Expand/Contract feature twisties.

Notice the general appearance of the page below, the one that contains twisties. Compare it with the appearance of the preceding page, the one you just came from that doesn't employ the Expand/Contract feature. Which version is less cluttered, less distracting? Which version do you find easier to read, dissect, understand, and explore? Which version gives you greater control over what you see?
