Academy Awards—best actor in a leading role

The Oscars

Here you see the Academy Awards for Best Actor.

The haunting song you're hearing is called As Time Goes By, (words and music by Herman Hupfeld). You may remember it as the theme song from the 1942 movie Casablanca (Best Picture—1943). This version is sung by Jimmy Durante, one of the many recording artists who have performed it brilliantly.

Notice how different this version is from the others played by The Muse of Film. (To play this song again, refresh page.)

Jimmy's interpretation is slow, graceful, almost charming, unlike many of his interpretations of other songs and a little surprising coming from an entertainer with his comic style and personal background. Perhaps this surprise intensifies the enchantment he invokes by his novel point of view.

Even though unexpected and different, Durante's interpretation is just as valid, just as rewarding, as the others chosen by The Muse Of Music. It demonstrates how As Time Goes By endures by speaking with many different voices that resonate with many different audiences, and by having so many different things to say, a hallmark of greatness.
